Hello, wonderful readers! I’m Julie Spark, and today I want to share my story with you—a journey that transformed my life from the hustle of Belgium to the serene shores of a tropical island. It’s a tale of breaking free from societal norms, seeking happiness, and finding true community. Whether you’re searching for inspiration or contemplating a life change, I hope my experiences spark something within you.
The Beginning: A Life in Belgium
It all started in Belgium, where I worked tirelessly as a sales representative, managing restaurants at night. I was living the life I thought I was supposed to live—working hard, spending freely, owning countless possessions, yet feeling trapped. I remember questioning, Is this really it? Is there not something else out there?
So, with a sense of urgency and hope, I sold my 350 pairs of shoes, which funded seven months of travel across South America. That was the beginning of my exploration.
The Decision to Break Free
I realized that the traditional path of grinding, working, and living in a perpetual cycle wasn’t for me. In pursuit of happiness and fulfillment, I decided to see if the grass was greener on the other side. What was meant as a short escape became a 15-year journey—and I have no regrets.
Finding Home on a Tiny Island
My travels led me to fall in love with a tiny island in Indonesia, Gili Air. Imagine a place with no cars, just horses, bicycles, and a peaceful way of life that resonated with my soul. The natural beauty was stunning, but the island’s community is what truly captured my heart. I found a sense of belonging, unconditional love, and a nurturing environment that was simply absent back in Belgium.
Building a New Life and Business
On Gili Air, I embraced the local life, working as a scuba instructor, learning to spin fire, and finding joy in simple pleasures. I also met my Indonesian partner at the whimsical Space Bar, where I learned the art of hula hooping. Here, I invested in a home, despite my reservations as a traveler. It turned out to be my best investment—offering me both a sense of stability and a base to return to after my travels.
Family and Growth
My brother joined me on the island, where he detoxed, rediscovered himself, and we started a successful gardening business together. This experience was captured in a Belgian TV documentary, showcasing our life-changing journey.
Our parents later joined us on the island, bringing both challenges and opportunities for growth. Living together helped us confront past patterns and find resolution, teaching me about personal space and honesty in relationships.
New Adventures and Investments
To balance my needs for solitude and family time, I ventured to Thailand, where I found a healing sanctuary and bought land. This investment, which has already doubled in value, reminds me of how life presents opportunities when we listen to our hearts.
Meanwhile, I continue to invest in various businesses—both online and locally—using the income from renting my house during peak seasons. This approach allows me to take care of my family and explore other passions.
Reflections on Life in Europe
Summer visits to Europe have been enlightening, as I reconnect with friends and explore potential business ventures. The era of burnout and depression in Europe underscores the importance of finding a life rhythm that suits each of us. I am here to inspire others to dream bigger and create the life they desire.
Closing Thoughts: Embrace Your Path
Living on a tropical island has taught me the power of pause, the importance of choices, and the beauty of community. As I reflect on my journey, I’m reminded of my grandmother’s words: If it is your path, it will be placed right on your lap.
Thank you for joining me on this journey. Please feel free to share your thoughts, dreams, or questions in the comments below. Let’s inspire each other to embrace the path that leads to our true selves.
