For years, I believed healthy relationships looked peaceful.
I imagined couples who never raised their voices.
Never disagreed.
Never went to bed upset.
I thought if two people truly loved each other, difficult conversations would somehow disappear.
Then I spent years facilitating retreats, working with couples, studying nervous system regulation, and sailing with crews from all over the world.
I discovered something that completely changed the way I see relationships.
Healthy couples don’t avoid conflict.
They repair it.
And that’s a very different skill.
The Problem Isn’t Conflict
Every relationship experiences moments of tension.
Someone forgets.
Someone feels hurt.
Someone misunderstands.
Someone is tired.
Someone feels unseen.
Conflict itself isn’t a sign that something is wrong.
In fact, conflict often means two people care enough to express what matters to them.
The real question isn’t:
“Do you fight?”
The real question is:
“What happens after the fight?”
Your Nervous System Joins Every Conversation
Most people think arguments begin with words.
I don’t believe they do.
I believe they begin much earlier.
Before you speak, your nervous system has already asked one important question:
Am I safe?
If the answer is yes, you naturally become more patient.
You listen.
You stay curious.
You ask questions.
If the answer is no, your body prepares to protect you.
Your breathing changes.
Your shoulders tighten.
Your heart races.
You interrupt.
You defend yourself.
Or you shut down completely.
You’re no longer trying to understand.
You’re trying to survive.
That’s why I often say:
Most arguments aren’t communication problems. They’re nervous system problems.
Why We Keep Having the Same Argument
Have you ever noticed that every fight starts looking strangely familiar?
The topic changes.
The pattern doesn’t.
Maybe it’s money this week.
The dishes next week.
Family the week after.
But underneath every argument is often the same question.
Do I matter?
Can I trust you?
Am I safe with you?
Those questions are rarely spoken out loud.
Yet our nervous systems hear them every time.
Repair Is More Powerful Than Perfection
One of the biggest myths about relationships is that successful couples don’t make mistakes.
The healthiest couples I’ve met apologise.
They come back.
They take responsibility.
They ask questions.
They stay curious.
They don’t allow one difficult conversation to become one difficult month.
Repair sounds like:
“I’m sorry.”
“Help me understand.”
“I can see why that hurt.”
“Can we try again?”
Those simple sentences rebuild safety.
And safety is where love grows.
Curiosity Changes Everything
One question has transformed my own relationships more than any communication technique I’ve ever learned.
Instead of asking:
Who’s right?
I now ask:
Can you help me understand?
That one shift changes the entire energy of a conversation.
Curiosity softens defensiveness.
Listening replaces proving.
Connection replaces competition.
Understanding becomes more important than winning.
The Goal Isn’t to Avoid Conflict
If you’re waiting for a relationship where nobody ever gets triggered…
You’ll be waiting forever.
Life is messy.
People make mistakes.
Stress happens.
Misunderstandings happen.
What creates strong relationships isn’t the absence of conflict.
It’s the presence of emotional safety.
The confidence that even after a difficult conversation, you’ll find your way back to each other.
A Simple Practice to Try Today
The next time you feel yourself becoming defensive, pause for one deep breath and ask yourself:
- Is my nervous system feeling safe right now?
- Am I listening to understand, or listening to reply?
- What might this person be feeling beneath their words?
- What would curiosity sound like in this moment?
You don’t need perfect communication.
You need a regulated nervous system and the willingness to come back to connection.
One conversation at a time.
